Rotary and Big Brother Big Sisters Partnership " A Unique Approach"

The Rotary Club of Maysville held it’s meeting at Maysville Elementary School today to honor the “Buddy Program” for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The Rotary Clubs of Pollocksville and Maysville adopted BBBS as one of their “hands-on” projects three years ago. Rotarians have committed to mentoring a child at the school for one hour a week. They travel to the school following the weekly Rotary meeting.

Jones County coordinator, Carol Jackson, honored the volunteers and the children today during a regular Rotary meeting. Maysville Rotary President Dan Ryan gave the gavel to his Little Buddy Dakis to call the meeting to order and help preside over the meeting. The “Buddies” were joined by Superintendent of Jones County Schools, Ethan Lenker, Rotary 7730 District Governor Elect Phil Crawford, and BBBS Executive Director Patti Withington and Maysville Principal Barry Collins.(See pictures here.)

The partnership between Rotary and BBBS is a new and unique concept and helped the BBBS agency in Southeastern NC receive a $530,000 grant from the United States Department of Education. Rotary and BBBS celebrate their 100th anniversary this year. What a way to celebrate!

The most memorable event during the recognition was when a young boy, who had been on the waiting list to have a mentor, was recognized and one of the Rotarians stepped up to volunteer to be his mentor next school year. Rod and Warren will make a great team. We wish to thank all the Rotarians and parent volunteers for their continued committment to “service above self” and for making a difference in the life of a child.
